I have been walking the aisles at Carrara Markets since I first moved to the Gold Coast, and it still feels like the city’s best-kept open secret. Every Saturday and Sunday the site at the corner of Gooding Drive and Manchester Road turns into a small town of more than 300 stalls, spread across 24 acres. Locals come for the fresh produce and the bargain fashion. Tourists come for the souvenirs and the Saturday-morning atmosphere. Families come because the kids can ride a pony, play mini golf and eat a too-big strawberry ice cream before lunch.
This is not a polished indoor mall. It is a weekend market in the true Queensland sense: open-air, a little dusty underfoot, run by small traders who have been there for decades. If you are visiting the Gold Coast, Carrara Markets is worth a morning. If you already live here, it is worth remembering why you started going in the first place.
Opening hours
Carrara Markets opens every weekend, all year round. Entry is free and parking is free.
- General markets: Saturday and Sunday, 8am to 3pm.
- Car boot sale: Sunday morning, 7am to 10am.
The market runs on public holidays unless otherwise noted. Check the official Carrara Markets website before Easter and Christmas, as hours can shift on those weekends.
What you will find at the stalls
With more than 300 stalls, the range changes week to week, but the main categories stay reliable. The market is strongest for fashion, fresh food, plants, homewares and one-off finds.
Fashion and accessories
There are over 100 fashion outlets selling women’s and men’s clothing, shoes, handbags, hats, resort wear, vintage pieces and children’s outfits. Jewellery ranges from silver and gold to antique and body jewellery, and you will also find sunglasses, watches and watch repairs.
Fresh produce and food
Fruit and veg outlets, continental delis and European speciality stalls are the reason many locals make a regular weekly trip. Around the market there are roughly 15 cafes and takeaway spots serving everything from a big breakfast to juice and ice cream.
Homewares, plants and gifts
Expect pots, plants, flowers, artificial plants, kitchenware, rugs, tools, soaps, candles, hardware and outdoor furniture. The Australiana and souvenir stalls are handy for visitors, while the art, framing and print stalls suit anyone looking for something more unique.
Services and repairs
You can get keys cut, clothing altered, phone screens replaced, batteries swapped and engraving done while you browse. These practical stalls are easy to miss but are often the reason people return.
Collectables, second-hand and curiosity stalls
The preloved book stalls, LP and music memorabilia stands, die-cast collectables, coins, stamps, bric-a-brac, antiques and second-hand furniture are where you lose track of time. There is also a small strip of mystical stalls with crystals, incense, oils and readers.
Sunday car boot sale
The car boot sale starts earlier than the main market, running from 7am to 10am on Sunday. Sellers set up from their cars and sell preloved goods, collectables and household items. If you enjoy the hunt, arrive at 7am with cash in hand and a willingness to dig through boxes.
Family attractions
Carrara Markets is one of the easier family outings on the Gold Coast. Attractions include pony rides, a baby animal farm, putt-putt mini golf, a bungy trampoline, face painting and a roller-skating rink. Entry to the market itself is free, but each attraction sets its own price.
Getting there
The market is at the corner of Gooding Drive and Manchester Road, Carrara, Queensland 4211.
- By car: Take the Gooding Drive exit 77 from the M1 (Pacific Highway), whether you are travelling north or south. Parking is free for more than 4,000 cars.
- From the Gold Coast Highway: Exit at Pacific Fair / Hooker Boulevard in Broadbeach and continue along the road as it becomes Gooding Drive. It is roughly 4km to the market.
- By tram and bus: Take the G:Link tram to Broadbeach South Station, then catch a connecting Translink or Surfside bus to the market. The trip from Surfers Paradise takes about 30 minutes.
- By train: Get off at Nerang Train Station and take a bus to the market. For full timetables, visit Translink.
Insider tips
- Arrive by 8:30am. The car park fills quickly and the best car boot finds go early.
- Bring cash. Many stallholders prefer cash, especially for small purchases and the car boot sale.
- Wear a hat and sunscreen. Most of the market is open-air, and the Queensland sun is real even in winter.
- Bring a bag or trolley. You will underestimate how much you buy.
- Plan for a half-day. Between shopping, breakfast and the kids’ attractions, two to three hours is a realistic visit.
- Check the car boot first on Sundays. It winds up by 10am, so go there before the main stalls.
Why Carrara Markets still matters
In a city famous for shopping centres and theme parks, Carrara Markets is the unglamorous, useful, democratic part of the Gold Coast. It is where a local grower sells strawberries beside a woman who alters jeans, beside a kid buying a second-hand cricket bat. That mix is harder to find than it used to be. If you have not been for a while, or if you are new to the city, it is worth a Saturday morning.
