Fitness Challenges That Bring the Community Together
Team-based events on Gold Coast beaches and trails are drawing residents into shared workouts that build both fitness and local connections.
How we reported this

More than 280 participants signed up for the July beach relay series that started at Kurrawa Beach on 5 July.
These group fitness challenges have gained traction as residents seek regular outdoor activity that also creates regular social contact in neighbourhoods from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads. The events fill a gap left by disrupted indoor schedules and give people a structured reason to meet at the same time each week.
Surf clubs and hinterland trails host weekly team tasks
North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club runs a Saturday morning obstacle relay that moves from the sand into the shallows, while a separate group organises monthly hikes through Lamington National Park starting at the Binna Burra trailhead. Both programs require teams of four to complete timed sections together, turning individual training into coordinated effort. Kurrawa Beach volleyball courts host a separate Tuesday evening ladder challenge limited to mixed pairs who rotate opponents every 15 minutes.
Registration data from the Gold Coast City Council active communities unit shows a 22 percent rise in team entries for beach and trail events between January and June this year. The most popular format charges $18 per person for a four-week block, with proceeds split between equipment for the surf clubs and trail maintenance in the hinterland. Sessions begin at 6:30 am to avoid peak heat and finish with a short group stretch led by volunteer instructors.
Upcoming relays are listed on the council website for 19 July at Kurrawa and 26 July at the Binna Burra car park. New teams can register on site with cash or card, and participants are advised to bring water and wear club colours for easy identification during the timed sections.
