Gold Coast City Council has rolled out free senior fitness programs at multiple venues beginning 15 July 2026.

Older residents in the region face rising rates of inactivity, and council data shows participation in group exercise can cut isolation for those living alone. The new offerings come as the local population aged 65 and over reached 92,000 last year, prompting the authority to increase access without fees at existing parks and community halls.

Beach and park sessions

Classes run three mornings a week at Kurrawa Park near Broadbeach, where instructors lead seated strength work and light walking circuits along the foreshore path. A second set of sessions meets at the Southport Community Centre on Scarborough Street every Tuesday and Thursday at 9am, focusing on balance drills that use the indoor hall floor. Both locations sit within short bus rides from central suburbs such as Surfers Paradise and Main Beach.

Participants also receive maps for self-guided walks that link to nearby Surf Life Saving clubs at Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach, allowing groups to extend time outdoors without extra cost. The council supplies mats and resistance bands on site.

Numbers and next steps

Council records indicate 620 seniors joined similar free sessions in the first half of 2025, with average attendance per class listed at 28 people. Registration opened online through the Gold Coast City Council website on 10 July 2026 and requires only a name and suburb. Spots fill on a first-come basis, and printed schedules are available at the Southport library branch on Garden Street.

Residents can check the council events calendar or call the community services line at 1300 000 000 for updated times before heading out. Those new to the programs are advised to arrive 10 minutes early for a brief orientation at the listed venue.
