Three community fitness events open registration this month on the Gold Coast, including a 5-kilometre fun run along Kurrawa Beach and a 10-kilometre charity walk through the Hinterland Lamington trails.

July marks the start of the cooler training season when clubs schedule outdoor sessions before summer heat returns. Local participation in group runs and walks has grown since 2023, with organisers citing demand for low-cost social exercise near home rather than gym memberships.

Beach and surf club events

The Kurrawa Beach volleyball courts will host the annual Broadbeach Charity Fun Run on 25 July, starting at 7am from Goodwin Terrace. Entry costs $30 and proceeds support the local Surf Life Saving club. Participants can choose a 5-kilometre course along the shoreline or a shorter 2-kilometre option suitable for families. The nearby Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club runs a weekly Wednesday night group walk along the same stretch of sand, open to non-members for a $5 donation.

Hinterland trails and group walks

Further inland, the Lamington Lamington Hiking Group organises a charity walk on 2 August starting from the Binna Burra trailhead. The 10-kilometre route passes through rainforest sections with a $25 entry fee that funds trail maintenance. Walkers meet at 8am and finish by midday. Both events encourage participants to bring their own water and wear appropriate footwear, with first-aid teams stationed at checkpoints.

Data from the Gold Coast City Council shows 4,200 people joined organised beach or hinterland fitness events in the first half of 2025, up from 3,100 the previous year. Average group sizes range from 80 to 150 people per session. Entry prices remain under $35 to keep events accessible.

Interested residents can register through the Surf Life Saving Queensland website or the Binna Burra visitor centre for the August walk. Check the council events calendar for weather updates and any required medical clearances before joining.
