The Gold Coast has a range of free mental health services available to residents, with organisations such as the Gold Coast Health Service and the Community Centre at Nerang offering support and guidance to those in need.

With the recent heatwave and ongoing pressures of modern life, mental health and stress management have become increasingly important topics of conversation. The Gold Coast, with its thriving wellness influencer community and abundance of outdoor spaces, is well-placed to support residents in maintaining good mental health. However, for many, accessing support services can be a daunting task, particularly when it comes to cost. Fortunately, there are a number of free services available across the Coast, from the beaches of Burleigh Heads to the hinterland communities of Tamborine Mountain.

Local Services and Support

In Southport, the Gold Coast Health Service operates a Community Mental Health Service, which provides free support and guidance to residents. Similarly, the Robina Community Centre offers a range of free mental health services, including counselling and support groups. The centre is located on San Antonio Court, just off the M1, making it easily accessible by car or public transport. For those living in the northern suburbs, the Helensvale Community Centre on Sir John Overall Drive is another option, with a range of free services and activities available to support mental wellbeing.

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2020, 1 in 5 Australians experienced a mental health disorder, with anxiety and depression being the most common conditions. On the Gold Coast, a survey conducted by the City of Gold Coast in 2022 found that 45% of residents reported experiencing high levels of stress, with 21% reporting that they had experienced a mental health issue in the past 12 months. The good news is that accessing support services can make a significant difference, with a study by the Black Dog Institute finding that 75% of people who accessed mental health services reported an improvement in their symptoms.

In terms of accessing these free services, residents can start by contacting the Gold Coast Health Service on 1300 744 284 or visiting their website at goldcoasthealth.qld.gov.au. The Community Centre at Nerang can be contacted on 07 5502 0222, and the Robina Community Centre on 07 5667 6666. For those preferring to access services online, the Australian Government's Head to Health website provides a range of free mental health resources and support services, including online counselling and support groups.
