Gold Coast locals are flocking back to aquatic centres in record numbers, with family swim programs and community group classes filling pools from Southport to Miami in winter 2026.

With gyms and fitness classes disrupted or moved online over the past few years, community sport and group exercise have taken on renewed significance. For the city’s active residents, aquatic centres offer more than just a way to keep fit: they double as neighbourhood meeting points and safe, accessible social outlets for all ages—even as the Gold Coast’s population passes 670,000 this year.

Where Locals Dive In: Pools and Programs

At Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, nestled beside the Broadwater on Marine Parade, the Friday morning AquaFit class is packed. Dozens of regulars—some still toweling off from their earlier laps—take to the water for low-impact fitness. "We’ve seen bookings for Learn to Swim surge since school holidays started," a program manager told The Daily Gold Coast. The centre, which boasts six heated pools, offers everything from infant water safety lessons to Masters Swim squads and rehabilitation classes, drawing residents from Southport, Labrador, and beyond.

Further south, Miami Aquatic Centre on Pizzey Drive is equally busy on Saturday mornings with its Little Flippers program, tailored for preschoolers and their carers. At 9 a.m., teenage lifeguards set up rainbow-coloured noodles and inflatable floats while parents sip coffee from the Pool Kiosk. Both venues, operated in partnership with local council, have expanded multi-week pass options and family discounts since April. Gold Coast Swim School, based at Nerang and Ashmore pools, launched its “Swim for Life” inclusive lessons this May, welcoming residents from culturally diverse backgrounds as part of a Healthy Communities initiative funded by the Queensland Government.

Accessible and Evidence-Based Exercise

The Gold Coast City Council’s own figures show more than 440,000 visits to council-run aquatic centres in the last financial year, up 12% from 2024. Group fitness classes—Aqua Aerobics, Deep Water Running, and even underwater spin bikes—accounted for more than 18,000 participant visits. The average price for an adult swim entry is $6.10, with Learn to Swim packages starting at $18.50 per lesson or $160 for a 10-pack, according to up-to-date rates published by City Aquatics. Notably, a 2025 University of Queensland study found that participation in community aquatic exercise led to higher self-reported wellbeing and reduced joint pain in over-50s compared to land-based fitness programs.

For families watching budgets or those new to group fitness, free community events pop up regularly at local venues: last month’s Underwater Dance Party at Helensvale Aquatic Centre drew more than 120 participants, backed by funding from the Gold Coast Health Plan.

Those considering a fresh start can trial most group sessions on a casual basis, and instructors encourage people to come as they are—no lycra required. The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre is running Winter Wellness Family Days every Sunday until 4 August, with half-price entry and free mini-swim classes on offer. For updates, timetables, and bookings, visit cityofgoldcoast.com.au/aquatics or check individual pool websites. As spring approaches, more locals will take the plunge—confirming what neighbourhood swimmers already know: sometimes, all it takes to build fitness and community is a dip in the pool.
