Gold Coast residents are building participation through neighbourhood clubs and council-backed sessions that started expanding in early 2026.

More than 12,000 locals signed up for organised community sport sessions across the Gold Coast in the first half of 2026, a direct result of expanded programs run by neighbourhood clubs rather than elite pathways.
The growth comes as families seek low-cost weekly activities after school terms resumed in late January, with councils and volunteers filling gaps left by rising private club fees elsewhere in Queensland.
Programs at specific Gold Coast sites
At Broadbeach Park on the corner of Surf Parade and Hooker Boulevard, the Broadbeach Community Sports Club now runs Tuesday evening touch football and netball drills for ages eight to 14, drawing 180 participants each week. A few kilometres north, the Southport Sports Association at the Queen Street Reserve added Saturday morning basketball clinics that started in March and already list 95 regular players from Labrador and Parkwood postcodes.
Both groups receive small grants from the City of Gold Coast’s Active Neighbourhoods fund, which covers equipment and insurance but leaves day-to-day coaching to parent volunteers.
Numbers and costs on the ground
City records show the Active Neighbourhoods fund supported 47 clubs this year with a total budget of $312,000, while average per-player fees sit at $45 for an eight-week term. Participation data released by the council last month recorded a 22 percent rise in junior registrations compared with the same period in 2025.
Organisers plan to open new sessions at the HOTA outdoor courts in Surfers Paradise from 20 July, with registration forms available at the Gold Coast City Council website and at the Broadbeach and Southport clubrooms. Interested families can also attend free come-and-try afternoons this Saturday at both parks between 9am and noon.
