How to Get Involved in Gold Coast Sports and What You Need to Know to Start
Local clubs and facilities are opening registration for winter programs across multiple codes this month.
How we reported this

Gold Coast residents can sign up for community sports teams through the city council's active recreation portal starting July 15.
Interest in local leagues has grown after the national team’s run in the World Cup and recent rugby internationals, pushing more adults and juniors toward organised play rather than casual park sessions. The timing aligns with the end of the school term, when clubs finalise winter squads for AFL, rugby league and soccer.
Two established entry points sit within easy reach of most suburbs. The Carrara Sports Precinct on Nerang-Broadbeach Road runs introductory sessions every Tuesday evening for new AFL players through the Gold Coast Suns community arm, while the Southport Sharks club at Owen Park on Queen Street offers six-week learn-to-play rugby league blocks aimed at adults over 25. Both sites provide gear for first-timers and link participants directly to graded teams.
What registration covers
Players must supply their own boots and mouthguard, though clubs lend balls and bibs during the first four weeks. A current Blue Card is required for anyone over 18 who might assist with junior groups, and all new members complete a 20-minute online concussion awareness module before their first session. Fees for the eight-week winter block start at $85 for juniors and $120 for seniors, covering insurance and ground access.
Next steps for new players
Visit the Gold Coast City Council website before July 20 to secure a spot, then attend the compulsory equipment check at either venue. Those who complete the initial block can move straight into full-season competition without extra paperwork.
