Gold Coast residents can register for the 2026 winter sports season through the City of Gold Coast active communities portal starting 15 July.

The timing aligns with the close of the national under-20 athletics window and the Wallabies' mid-year schedule, which has boosted interest in contact sports across Queensland. Families and adults who sat out last year now face shorter waitlists at several venues because clubs expanded junior and masters divisions after a 12 per cent rise in participation numbers recorded by the council in 2025.

Two established entry points sit within easy reach of most suburbs. The Carrara Sports Precinct on Nerang-Broadbeach Road runs weekly skills sessions for rugby league and AFL every Tuesday evening, while the Southport Sharks facility on Musgrave Avenue offers six-week introductory blocks for both codes that include equipment loans and insurance cover. New players must supply their own mouthguard and boots; the clubs provide the rest for the trial period.

Registration fees for the full season sit at $185 for seniors and $95 for juniors under 18, with an early-bird discount of $20 available until 22 July. The council's 2025 annual report showed 4,872 participants across its 14 partner clubs, up from 4,340 the previous year, confirming steady demand without oversubscription at most grounds.

Paperwork and first session checklist

Applicants need a current Medicare card, proof of age for juniors and a completed Play by the Rules concussion module that takes 15 minutes online. After payment, participants receive a confirmation email with the exact field allocation at either Carrara or the Sharks' home ground. Arrive 30 minutes early on the first night for a basic fitness screen run by club volunteers.

Those who complete the first four sessions automatically receive a season pass to the next home game at Cbus Super Stadium and a $15 voucher for the club canteen. Contact details for each program sit on the council website under the sport and recreation tab; phone lines open at 8 am on registration day for anyone without internet access.
