This week saw a thrilling conclusion to the Gold Coast Recreational Soccer League, with the Nerang Eagles taking out the top spot in a nail-biting 3-2 victory over the Burleigh Bears at Pizzey Park.
The amateur sport scene is a vital part of the Gold Coast's community, with thousands of locals participating in sports such as soccer, rugby, and netball every week. With the city's reputation as a hub for sport and recreation, it's no surprise that the amateur leagues are thriving. The Gold Coast City Council's investment in local sports infrastructure, including the recent upgrades to the fields at Owen Park in Southport, has also helped to support the growth of amateur sport in the area.
In other news, the Palm Beach Currumbin Alleygators have announced a new partnership with the Currumbin RSL, which will see the club receive funding and support for their junior development programs. The Alleygators, who play their home games at Salk Oval in Palm Beach, have a strong focus on developing young players and providing a fun and inclusive environment for all members. Meanwhile, the Surfers Paradise Apex Cricket Club is gearing up for their annual carnival, which will be held at the Surfers Paradise Cricket Ground on 17 July.
According to data from the Gold Coast Sport and Recreation Association, there are currently over 10,000 players registered in amateur soccer leagues across the city, with the average cost of registration ranging from $100 to $200 per player per season. The association also reports that there has been a 25% increase in participation in amateur netball leagues over the past 12 months, with the majority of games being played at the Gold Coast Netball Association's venue on Nerang-Broadbeach Road. As of 30 June, the top three teams in the Gold Coast Recreational Soccer League were the Nerang Eagles, Burleigh Bears, and the Robina City FC, with the Eagles having won 12 out of their 15 games so far this season.
Looking ahead to the coming weeks, the Gold Coast Touch Football Association will be hosting a series of come-and-try days at the Firth Park Touch Football Fields in Mudgeeraba, with sessions scheduled for 11 and 18 July. The association is encouraging all interested players to attend and get involved in the sport, with registration fees starting at just $50 per player for the remainder of the season. With the amateur sport scene on the Gold Coast continuing to go from strength to strength, it's an exciting time to get involved and be a part of the action.
