Gold Coast Latest Developments and What Happened This Week

Gold Coast City Council signed off on stage-two earthworks at the Coomera Sports and Leisure Centre on Tuesday, clearing the path for the main indoor arena roof to start going up by mid-August.

The timing lines up with the state government’s push to lock in 2032 Olympics contracts before the end of the financial year. Local builders say the decision removes a six-week delay that had threatened to push back the Robina Stadium upgrade timetable as well.

Venue works and light-rail link

Work crews will move onto the Coomera site from next Monday, focusing first on drainage along Foxwell Road before the arena slab is poured. At the same time, the light-rail extension team is finishing track testing between Helensvale and the new Gold Coast University Hospital stop, with passenger services now expected to start in early September. Residents in Oxenford and Maudsland have been told to expect extra truck movements on the Pacific Motorway during the next fortnight.

These two projects sit inside the same state funding envelope that also covers the Robina station precinct, where platform extensions are already underway. Council transport planners confirmed the combined timetable keeps the venues on track for test events in 2031.

Short-term rental checks begin

From Monday, compliance officers started knocking on doors in Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise to enforce the new 60-night annual cap on whole-home Airbnb listings. The rule, passed in May, applies to properties within 400 metres of the beachfront. So far, 87 hosts have received letters asking for booking records covering the past 12 months.

Real-estate data released yesterday shows average nightly rates for two-bedroom units in those suburbs rose to $312 in June, up from $274 the same month last year. The increase comes as tourism operators report bookings running 11 percent ahead of July 2025 figures.

Property owners who miss the 31 July registration deadline face fines starting at $3,200. Council staff will hold a drop-in session at the Southport Community Centre on 16 July to answer questions about the new register.

Next week’s council meeting will consider a separate proposal to fast-track development applications for three new hotel sites along the Gold Coast Highway at Miami. If approved, those projects would add another 420 rooms ahead of the 2027 Commonwealth Games trial events already scheduled for the coast.
