Gold Coast residents can start their winter explorations this weekend at the new Sunday morning circuit along the Nerang River bike path, which opened last month with added lighting and rest stations every two kilometres.

July brings shorter days and lower humidity that make outdoor plans easier than the December to March stretch, when heat often keeps people indoors after 10am. The change lets families and workers fit in short trips between work shifts or school runs without battling peak-season traffic on the Gold Coast Highway.

Two routes to try this month

One option starts at the Southport Broadwater Parklands boat ramp and follows the waterfront path north for three kilometres to the new shaded seating area near the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre. Another begins at the Burleigh Beach car park on Goodwin Terrace and heads south along the ocean boardwalk to the Tallebudgera Creek mouth, where a small kiosk now sells hot drinks until 4pm on weekdays.

City data from the June visitor survey showed 62 percent of local respondents planned at least one overnight or day trip inside the region before September, up from 48 percent in the same poll last year. Entry to most council-run parks remains free, though parking at the Surfers Paradise metered lots costs $3.40 an hour on Saturdays.

Next steps for this weekend

Pack a light jacket and water bottle, check the council app for any path closures after overnight rain, and aim to start before 9am to avoid the midday breeze along the beaches. Those routes connect directly to cafes on Surfers Paradise Boulevard and the new market stalls at Kurrawa Park on Saturday mornings.
