Lamington National Park: Gold Coast's Subtropical Rainforest Hotspot Revealed

Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland protects the largest area of subtropical rainforest in Australia, a landscape of extraordinary biodiversity that contrasts dramatically with the coastal development visible from the escarpment edge. The park's elevation, reaching more than 1,100 metres at its highest points, creates a climate dramatically cooler than the coast, supporting rainforest vegetation communities whose complexity and species richness reflects tens of millions of years of relatively stable climate conditions.

O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat, perched on the rim of the McPherson Range, has been welcoming visitors to Lamington since the O'Reilly family first established accommodation there in the 1920s. The retreat's tree-top walk provides an aerial perspective on the rainforest canopy that allows visitors to observe the wildlife and vegetation structure of the upper canopy without the physical effort of a technical climb. The feeding of rainbow lorikeets and other birds at the retreat has become one of the Gold Coast region's most photographed wildlife experiences.

The Binna Burra section of the park, accessible from the northern side of the range via Beechmont, provides a different entry point to the park with its own character and a different suite of walking tracks. The Border Track connecting Binna Burra to Green Mountains (O'Reilly's) is one of Australia's classic multi-day walks, traversing the full length of the park through rainforest and cool eucalypt forest.

The park's birdlife is one of Australia's finest, with the subtropical rainforest supporting a diversity of species that includes the rare and endemic albert's lyrebird, paradise riflebird, and the spectacular regent bowerbird. The concentration of quality birdwatching within easy reach of a major tourist city makes Lamington a significant wildlife tourism destination for international visitors whose natural history interests extend beyond the beach.
